General White Bass Info
3lb 8oz May 8, 2007

White Bass: The White Bass population in Devils Lake is impressive. The size of the White Bass here is almost unbelievable. If you locate White Bass during the pre-spawn in May you can catch multiple whopper club fish in a day. Fish from 17-19 inches weighing 3+lbs are very possible. Even later after the spawn the average size in many of the schools is close to 14 inches with the possibility of the 3lb fish always there. In an active school during the summer it's very possible to boat 100 fish in a day.

Daily Limit: 20 Possesion Limit: 80

SPRING: Usually the White Bass bite starts early-mid May as fish are moving into spawning areas. Look for moving water and riprap areas. Shore fishing can be tremendous with a jig and twister, small crankbaits, small spoons, small inline-spinners, plain hook and minnow, Storm Swimshads, and even fly fishing tackle. Many times in May shore fishing can be the best approach since the fish are near culverts under the road or along riprap shore lines.

SUMMER: (June-early September) White Bass fishing really gets exciting during this time of year. As the water temperature warms up the fish get increasingly active. Windy shore lines, shallow bays, shallow weed flats and shore lines all produce well. Look for fish breaking the surface or a bunch of birds circling an area as these are good indicators that White Bass are present and feeding. Once again jigs, crankbaits, swimshads, minnows, small spoons, small in-line spinners, and fly tackle work well.

FALL & WINTER: (Mid September - ice fishing) Usually the White Bass are done by the end of September. The water cools and they stop biting. Only occasionally  will White Bass be caught during the late fall or during ice fishing.
