Icing Finicky Perch

Nothing is more frustrating than having a school of perch that you've been catching fish on suddenly turn off because of weather.  You know they're down there because you're still marking them on your vexilar or seeing them on your camera but they just won't bite.  Weather can do that to perch.  Here on Devils Lake we run into this many times after a cold front moves in.  Nothing will cause these fish to be aggressive but there are a couple things you can try that maybe will turn the tables a little and let you at least pick up a few more fish than you wouldn't have.

   1.  Switch things up.  If the good bite had been on minnows try wax worms, euro larvae, spikes, or minnow heads.

   2.  Try being less aggressive in your presentation. Don't jig aggressively just try slowly raising and lowering your bait or "shaking" your bait.  You might have already found out that your deadstick might be producing more fish than what the rod you're jigging.

   3.  Add a drop line.  If you've been catching perch on Sweedish Pimples, Kastmasters, Jigging raps, or Chubby Darters and the fish are there but not   active remove the bottom hook if you can from the split ring.  Then tie a 4-6" lenght of 2-4lb monofilament line to the split ring and attach the hook or a smaller hook to the end of the line.  Then add a minnow head, wax worms, spikes, or euro larvae to the hook.  This causes the bait to flutter down more slowly and will often trigger more strikes on these less aggressive fish than having the hook directly on the lure.  This works the best for me on small Swedish Pimples and Kastmasters.

 Good luck!
