What's your favorite way to fish? That's a question I'm often asked. To be honest, I don't know. If I'm not catching fish I don't like that technique...at least that day. This last week we've been slip bobbering, castig crankbaits and large swimbaits, and pitching jigs. What is my favorite? Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday it was slip bobbers...Saturday swimbaits. Tomorrow? Not sure. The beauty of Devils Lake is that if you do have a favorite way to fish you can catch fish doing it. Trolling, pitching, bobbering...it all works and has its time and place. Right now we've been finding most of our fish in under 10ft of water. Warm bays, shallow flats, and wind swept shorelines have been what we've been looking for. For cranks try Countdowns, #5 shad raps, #5,#7 Flickershads, Salmo hornets, etc. For plastics on jigs try either sliders or walleye assasins, and for swim baits I like mimic minnows and swim shads. Blues, Purples, Reds, and firetigers have been working well.
Have a safe and productive trip! |

Wow! Has the fishing ever picked up!!! You can celebrate...the spring bite is on! Think shallow, think warm, and think a sharp fillet knife. Right now if you find shallow bays with warm water and cattails you should find Walleyes, Pike, and White bass. X-raps, Countdowns, Shadraps, and Flickershads have all had their place in the arsenal of many successful fishermen this week. Blue and Silver, Firetiger, Purples, and Reds are a good place to start. We've been fishing 2-5 feet of water and have been hitting really nice fish. Most fish the last two days for us have been 18-21" with a handfull larger. For the shore fishermen the bridges have been good for an evening bite on leeches. One thing to keep in mind when you're fishing the shallows is that you are going to catch a lot of Pike. Pike like to add $7 cranks to their trophy wall at home and if you aren't using an invisileader you can have a very expensive day. For more specifics on the bite, a good selection of tackle, live bait, pop, snacks, and ice please stop by our baitshop "Six Mile Bait" located next to the Six Mile Bay boat landing. The bite is on...HAVE FUN!!! |

The Sun is coming out this weekend!!!! Fishing has been hit and miss so far. The bridges have been doing well at times for fishermen jigging leeches and minnows. Some fish are starting to be caught shallow with cranks. So far mimic minnows, shallow x-rap shads, #5 shad raps, and Berkley Flicker Shads have all been producing fish. Firetiger, Bleeding Hot Olive, Glass Ghost, and Blue Shad have all been good colors. Fishing in 2-5ft of water around cattails and in shallow bays have been best. Fish are keying on the areas with the warmest water so look for shallow bays especially in the afternoon. With the nice weather on tap for this weekend look for the crank bite to get better with each passing day. Good luck and remember Six Mile Bait located at the Six Mile Bay boat landing has a great selection of tackle, four sizes of leeches sold by doz or half pound, and free coffee all day. |

Spring is here!!! Warm temps, mud, and thousands of snow geese filling the air. I love this time of year. Late ice fishing, early open water fishing, and the thoughts of getting out in the boat chasing down Devils Lake Walleyes, Pike, and Whitebass. The game and fish tell us that the Walleye population on Devils Lake is at an all time high and the Pike and Whitebass numbers are close. With such good information this year looks to be a memorable one on Devils Lake.
Now on to some news. This year I'm opening up Six Mile Bait next to the public boat landing on Six Mile Bay. Now you can buy your bait, tackle, pop and ice, launch your boat, and clean your fish all within 50 yards of each other. We will carry a nice selection of bait, tackle, pop, ice, and other convenience items. We are also a sponsor with North Dakota Fishing Challenge. A fishing tournament that raises funds for North Dakota Teen Challenge. The tournament is May 8th on the Missouri River and June 5th on Devils Lake. We will provide each team in the Devils Lake tournament with leeches, crawlers, or minnows in any combination up to 5 doz. For more infor on the North Dakota Fishing Challgenge go to ndfishingchallenge.com
Good luck and have a safe and productive spring. |

So far fishing this winter has been hit and miss. Fishing for Walleyes has been pretty good with more of the bites happening on humps and points in 10-20 feet of water. For this bite a deadstick with a minnow in combination with jigging a Chubby Darter, Jigging Rap, Northlan Flyer, or a buckshot rattle spoon have been working well. Perch are a little harder to find, and they can be there one day and gone the next. Perch have been hitting on halis, genz worms, and small jigging spoons tipped with spikes, waxi's, or minnow heads, and on small minnows on a plane hook. Perch are deeper 25-45 feet of water. The pike fishing has been pretty good in some of the area lakes as well with good reports coming from Morson lake and lake Irvine. Smelt or herring on tip-ups and jigging soft plastics have been working here. With this weekends storm travel on the lake will most likely become difficult. There are roads being plowed out of Ackerman Acres which is about 3-4 miles East of Devils Lake on Hwy 2, the Spirit Lake Casino which is south of the town of Devils Lake, and Woodland Resort which is West of Devils Lake on Hwy 19. Good luck! |

Generally fishing still has been pretty good but the changes in weather the last week and a half has caused there to be some challenging days. Challenging days aside the walleyes, white bass, and a few pike have still been cooperative. For Walleye fishing success has come a lot of different ways including trolling cranks, jigging, slip bobbering, and trolling bottom bouncers and spinners on sunken roads...casting cranks, jigging, and slip bobbering weed lines and weed pockets, trolling bottom bouncers w/ spinners on the old shore line 25-28 feet of water, and slip bobbering and jigging in the trees. Success has been coming in all over on the lake so if you prefer one method of fishing over the other try it on some of these different structures and enjoy the hunt. A few areas you might want to try would be the Golden Highway, Doc Hagens, the deep water structure around Ft. Totten, Foughty's point, Pelican Bay, the trees along Grahams Island. Good luck and enjoy our last couple of months of decent weather before you have to pull out the ice augers and fish houses.

Well, the fishing has sure stayed good this week. We've been catching most of our fish in 9-12 feet of water, but there are plenty of fish deeper and shallower. This week we've been concentrating on live bait rigging with bottom bouncers and spinners on the outside of weedlines. One day leeches works the best another nightcrawlers and some days it doesn't matter. Today it didn't matter. The last few days we've done best with metalic colored blades...gold, copper, and silver being the best. Earlier in the week green and chartreuse were the color. Fishing has also been good for those casting cranks on the edge of weeds, those slip bobbering trees, and those working bottom bouncers on deep structure. Some good areas have been the north end of creel bay, weed lines in 6 mile bay, Doc Hagens, trees around Grahams Island, Pelican bay, Knutson bay, and the deep structure in main bay such as Cactus point, Rocky Point, Bird Island, etc. Remember to be mobile. Good luck! |

Let me start off by apologizing for the amount of time between the last two reports. I will endeavor in the future to put up reports once every 7-10 days. Now on to the good news...the fishing has been very good. Walleyes have been very cooperative lately. The easiest way right now to find them seems to be trolling spinners or lindy rigs on and around deeper rocky points and humps. These humps and points can be found in many places on the lake. Some of these points and humps include Patience Point, Rocky Point, Cactus Point, Foughty's Point, and Bird Island. 23-40 feet of water in these areas has been a good bet. For those who don't like to fish that deep you can try trolling spinners, lindy rigs, or crankbaits on the outside edges of weeds in 8-14 feet of water with 9-11 feet being the sweet spot recently. Some of these areas include Stromme addition, Doc Hagens, and Knutson bay. For those of you who like to pitch cranks most of these same weed edges that contain cabbage and are in 5-8 feet. Finally slip bobbering in trees and underwater humps in 8-15 feet of water has been working well. Some areas to try here are the trees by Grahams island, monkey ridge, the gap, etc. Good luck to all the MWC and NTC fisherman. |

The fishing is sure fun this time of year. Walleye, Northern Pike, and White Bass sharing cover, sharing meals, and sharing space in the livewell. Sure doesn't get much better than this. This last week with the stable weather the fishing has been great. We're doing a lot of cranking and slip bobbering right now and with the water clarity diminishing because of the algae in the water we are having better luck shallow doing both. For cranking we're pitching #5 shad raps, 3/8 oz mimic minnow, flicker shads, and slurpies. Good colors have been Firetiger and Hot Bleeding Olive for the shad raps and Bluegill, Perch, and Golden Shiner for the mimic minnows. We're keying our cranking on windy shorelines, cabbage beds, and shallow flats. Most fish are coming in 3-8 feet of water. Good places to try would be Pelican, Skadsems Bay, Creel Bay, Six Mile Bay, Bud Bay, etc. We've also been slip bobbering in the trees in 6-12 feet of water as well. Smaller leeches seem to be doing better and are torn off less frequently. Good luck and remember to fish the wind. |
